Hello My Name Is XXXXXXX And I’m Having The Pins

Question: Hello my name is XXXXXXX and I’m having the pins and needles sensations in my legs. I went walking this past Monday and once I returned home I removed my shoes but not my socks and my leggings. I took a nap in my recliner and work up with the pins and needles sensation. I had massaged my legs for most of the night. I went to sleep and when I woke up I didn’t feel the sensation. Once I started moving around then I started feeling them again. Eventually it went away but today I went for another walk and now the feeling is back stronger. I’m trying not to panic because the sensations are nerve wrecking. I made an appointment to see my doctor but my appointment is at the end of the month. Please advise.

Brief Answer:
Symptoms are suggestive of neuropraxia.

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for posting your query.

I am Dr Sudhir Kumar, Neurologist, and I would try my best to help you.

I have noted your clinical details. Based on this, the most likely diagnosis is neuropraxia. In this condition, the nerve dysfunction occurs due to mechanical compression of the nerves located in the skin, which can happen because of tight fitting socks and leggings. There is no need to worry, as symptoms resolve on their own in a few days to few weeks.

I hope my answer helps. Please get back if you have any follow up queries or if you require any additional information.

Wishing you good health,

Dr. Kumasi....thank you for responding so quickly and your advice ! I actually have tears in my eyes because I was so upset about the sensations. I am currently on a weight loss program and walking is the only exercise that I can do right now. I had noticed that once I wake up in the morning the sensations subsides a lot. But today after I had walked some distance it just seems more intense. It’s good to know that it will eventually subside? Is there anything else that I can do to assist in this recovery?

Brief Answer:
Nothing specific needs to be done.

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for getting back with more information.

I hope you are not compromising on good nutrients such as vitamin B12, which is needed for good nerve functions. If in doubt, take B12 supplements.

Nothing more needs to be done at this stage, except for avoiding tight clothing.

Best wishes,

Dr Sudhir Kumar MD DM (Neurology)

Good morning Dr. XXXXXXX
I need to take a supplement because I was trying to eat food enriched in B12 but obviously it’s not doing the job. I will be purchasing something today and the tight clothes are put away. I’m also making sure that my shoes are not adding to the problem too.

So thank you once again. I truly appreciate your advice!

Dr. XXXXXXX ..
I will definitely keep you updated. Yesterday, I brought my B12 supplement and I have even changed my shoes. The sensations are getting weaker. If I start to feel anything stronger I just change the position of my legs. I think that I will be fine. Thanks for your responses and advice.
