Question: Hello doctor,
I have been breastfeeding and supplementing with formula to my 25 days old baby. I used to take metformin during my pregnancy and before pregnancy as I have pcos and it helps regulate my hormones and lets me regular periods. Can I take metformin during breastfeeding. Is it harmful if it passes through breastmilk. I used to take 250 mg / day metformin.

Hi....
Welcome to "Ask a Doctor" service.
I am Dr Ajeet XXXXXXX

I have gone through your query and here is my opinion.

Metformin is regarded as a safe medication for the breastfeeding mothers to treat diabetes and PCOS.You should continue taking it.

Metformin passes and traces of it has been detected in the breast milk.
But these amounts are not clinically significant and no adverse effects has been reported in the breastfed infants.

Hope that I have answered your query.

Stay healthy and stay blessed.
Regards.
