What Does Thumb Pain Indicate?

default
Posted on Tue, 24 Oct 2017
Question: Hello,

Unsure if I woke up this way, as I noticed this morning while at a meeting. Both of my thumbs are feeling some pain, not necessarily hurting, but quite uncomfortable and s feeling I am very aware of. After my meeting it was uncomfortable holding the steering wheel in the car. I have not experienced this before, and sometimes changing hand position causes relief, such as holding my purse over-handed rather than under-handed. No other fingers hurt, and there was no trauma or injury to my thumbs. It is both thumbs and localized to just my thumbs.

Thank you.

Brief Answer:
Can be tendonitis.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
The pain at the base of the thumbs that you are feeling without any history of trauma can be due to tendonitis- inflammation of the tendons. This can happen due to abnormal thumb position or prolonged pressure on the area- due to use of key boards or driving. Provide rest and do a hot compress in the area for relief. Applying a local analgesic gel and using a brace to provide an extra support for a few days will also help. This is likely to subside with these simple measures in 1-2 weeks. In case the pain persists then proper physiotherapy and oral muscle relaxants may be needed.
I hope this answers your query.
