Question: Hello. Quick question on STDs and treatment.

My partner was recently diagnosed with a chlamydia infection. She told me about the ailment / diagnosis and I went to the doctor. My physician prescribed me 1000MG of azithromycin which I took immediately before the results came back. We only had sex once prior to her positive test.

My test came back negative but I already had taken the antibiotics. We haven't had sex since, so my question is ... is it possible for the infection to be resistant to the antibiotics during the incubation stage? Basically, since I got a negative result on my test AND took antibiotics as a caution ... I am wondering if I am in the clear or is there a way for the infection to lie dormant until it's ready. Thanks for your help.

Brief Answer:
Chlamydia can be sensitive of the antibiotics during incubation period.

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear and welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

The incubation stage for chlamydia is 7 days post-exposure.

After this period of time the test results are very accurate.

Chlamydia can be sensitive of the antibiotics even during the incubation stage.

You can also retest after two weeks from the treatment to make sure that the treatment was effective.

In our daily practice, we recommend doing another test three months after the treatment to make sure that the infection did not re appear.

Hope I have answered your query.

Thanks Doctor. Appreciate the response. When you say that chlamydia can be sensitive to antibiotics during the incubation stage... Do you mean that antibiotics can kill the infection during this time?
