Question: Hello, My name is Michele, I’m 57.
Four years ago I was admitted to the ER and underwent Laproscopic surgery using Bard Phisio Mesh to repair my strangulated umbilical hernia. While in the ER before my surgery they discovered a mass on my right ovary which woul have to be removed at a later date.
They completed the hernia repair, but I was still in tremendous pain for almost six months. That’s when my next surgery was scheduled, a total abdominal bilateral hysterectomy. And at the same time there was a doctor, a Gastroenterologist standing by to remove the mesh previously used, and repair the hernia that he said hadn’t been done before.
So that’s my recent history.
And I have a couple of questions related to my first surgery.
The first, is it normal to lose the sence of touch following Laproscopic surgery? Because I have and will it ever return? My belly will get an itch but when I go to scratch I can’t feel my nails!
Second, again after the Laproscopic surgery.
I get these intense muscle cramps from across my ribs and down both sides of my belly. They usually come on right after I have a bowel movement or if I havent eaten in a while. Ive never gotten pains like this before. I’m ok if I lay down for a while, but sitting standing or walking around makes them more intense. What might this be? Any ideas ?

Hi
There will be no loss of touch sensation after Laparoscopic surgery. If the nerve supplying a particular area is injured/involved/damaged due to any cause the sensation to that area will be lost. Laparoscopic procedures require only small incisions. They have less chance of damaging the nerve.
The cramps on the right side could be due to the Musculoskeletal cause. During any activity, the.muscles may respond like this. It looks physiological. If they are more painful, I prescribe Skeletal muscle relaxant tablet containing THIOCOLCHICOSIDE to my patients. Next possibility is bowel movement which will be more intense after any Surgery in the abdomen. Mild adhesions between bowel loops and the raw surfaces after surgery inside the abdomen will trigger these movements. They are a normal phenomenon in a few individuals.

Thank you for your quick response and for taking the time to answer my concerns.
Although, I would like to add that the “loss of feeling” sensation is isolated to my belly, and in direct relation to the area where a large section of Omen was removed during the Laproscopic surgery. Could these be considered, cause and affect?
Also, the cramping, spasms, or tensing of my muscles isn't just down my right side.
Its on BOTH sides, but the majority is in front and it’s ALL above my waistline and they began only a couple of years ago. I’ve always had normal bowel movements, no history of constipation, bloating or anything like that.
I do, however have issues with heartburn that I have suffered with for many years on almost a daily basis for which I take an generic OTC, Ranitidine 75 to 150 mg Tabs.

Even though a large amount of Omentum is removed Laparoscopically, it has no relationship with loss of sensation.
If the spasms are in superficial layers of the Abdomen, it could be due to a Musculoskeletal cause.
If they are intraabdominal, it could be due to bowel movements.
Darolac or Prepro HS or Enbioz are few Pre and probiotic capsules which may help in such intraabdominal condition.
