Question: Hello! I’m taking 200mg of amiodrone daily. 1/2 in the morning and the other1/2 around 5pm. I was wondering how safe it would be if I took 5mg if celexa at noon. I have had heart problems since I was 31 yrs old. I get very depressed and I have anxiety. How high is the risk factor taking both at these times.

Brief Answer:
Celexa and amiodarone may affect the heart rhythm- careful monitoring is needed if used together

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome to "Ask a Doctor" service,

I carefully read your query and understand your concern.

Both amiodarone and Celexa (citalopram) are drugs that are generally used long term. Both these medications may cause changes in QTc in the ECG, thus affecting the heart electric activity and risk arrhythmias.

You will need to discuss these drugs with your doctor and set up a plan to monitor you with ECGs regularly to make sure you are not developing the changes mentioned above and ensure you are safe.

Please be aware that use together includes even use on the same day, so even if you take them apart from one another but get both these drugs daily, you are at risk of heart rhythm issues.

I hope this answers your query.
I remain at your disposal if further medical assistance is needed.
