Brief Answer:
Usually nothing to worry about

Detailed Answer:
Hello, I'm Dr. Branch, thanks for using Ask a Doctor. Patients often report bumps on their body and understandably are very worried about them, but in the vast majority of cases, they are normal lymph nodes, or only slightly swollen, and nothing to worry about. The size is an important factor, as lymph nodes less than 1 cm may be able to be palpated, but would be considered normal. Also, the time course is important. If the lymph node has been enlarged for only a few days or weeks, it could be due to underlying infection or inflammation, and would be a normal response and nothing to be concerned about.

The most worrisome diagnosis, of course, is cancer, especially of the lymph nodes. But only if you were having fevers, night sweats, weight loss, or the lymph node was steadily growing over several weeks or months, or was very hard and fixed (difficult to move), would I be concerned for this. If you did have any of these symptoms, the next step would be a biopsy to rule out any malignancy.

I hope that helps, please let me know if you have any questions about any of that, and I would be glad to discuss it with you further.

Brief Answer:
A lymph node would not typically be mistaken for a pulled muscle

Detailed Answer:
Depending on the location of what you are feeling, normally a lymph node, which is round and you usually can feel all the way around it, would not be mistaken for a pulled muscle, but it is hard to say without being able to see or feel it. If you would like to take a picture with an indication of where you are feeling this lump, I might be able to help more, just let me know.

Brief Answer:
A small lymph node would be normal

Detailed Answer:
Yes, I think getting an evaluation so that a doctor can feel it would be reassuring, and based on your description, I would expect that the doctor will say it is normal and nothing to worry about.

Please let me know if I can help with anything else, I would be glad to do so.
