Hello I Recently Received The Results Of A Lumbar Puncture

Question: Hello

I recently received the results of a lumbar puncture I had done to determine opening csf pressure. In discussing the results with my neurologist, she mentioned that my mbp csf was slightly higher than normal, which, among other things, could be an every indicator for MS. This scared me, obviously. Looking at my test results it would appear that the level she is referring to is 2.3 ng/ml which I’m reading is normal. Is this within normal range? I was rushed out of the doctor’s office before I was able to fully register that I should ask her about it. Please do explain if this is within normal range and, if it is not, what it could indicate besides MS. Thank you.

Brief Answer:
The normal value of mbp.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome to 'Ask a Doctor' service.

I have read your query and here is my advice.

The level of 2.3 ng/ml is within the normal rangers of the myelin basic protein levels in a CSF analysis.

Most of the laboratories refer the levels of the mbp in CSF as normal if found below the 4 ng/ml.

Oligoclonal bands and IgG are well-established markers for MS.

MBP may be found increased also in trauma, encephalomyelitis, stroke, etc.

Hope you found the answer helpful.

Let me know if I can assist you further.
