Question: Hello, I recently had routine blood work done and my labs showed decreased white blood cell (Lymphocytes) and increased EBV antibody panel numbers. What could cause this?

I have attached all of the labs that were ran. The reason they were ran is because I showed a WBC count of 3.5 a little over a year ago so they wanted to retest to see if it was still low, and it was. However, at the same time they tested for a lot of other things. The only one that caught my eye was the EBV panel, and I was just curious if this is 'normal' or if I should be concerned. Thank you so much!

Brief Answer:
Presence of Ig G suggest past infection against Epstein Barr virus.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query on Ask A Doctor forum.

I have gone through your lab reports.
The lab reports show that Ig G is detected against Epstein Barr virus.
Presence of Ig G suggests presence of past infection with Epstein Barr virus.
Absence of Ig M antibodies rules out possibility of active infection.
The complete blood count shows low white blood cell count with mildly reduced lymphocyte count.
However, these values do not suggest any serious pathology so nothing to worry.
The white blood count should be monitored regularly to look for any further fall.

Thanks and tak care

Dr Shailja Puri,

Thanks for your response! That makes sense. Does the increased Early AG AB IGG mean anything? Or is that also tied to the past infection you mentioned?

I hope you have a great day!

Brief Answer:
Ig G antibodies suggest past infection which are protective in nature.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome again,
Increase in Ig G antibody is suggestive of past infection and these antibodies are protective in nature.
So, there is nothing to worry.
For anxiety you need to consult your physician or psychiatrist for clinical assessment,
Anxiety can be managed by counselling or medication or both.

Thanks and take care
