Hello, I Recently Did A Brain Mri Which Showed Sphenoethmoidal

Question: Hello,

I recently did a brain mri which showed sphenoethmoidal recess retention cyst 1.5cm! The reason I had an mri is because I felt dizzy, nauseous, and my eyes felt weird. My questions are, is this cyst new? I’ve never had any sinus infection! But in the last week I’ve been coughing a lot. Also, is the cyst in the ethmoid or sphenoid sinus? Would you recommend I remove this, my ENT said he could do it no problem. I feel between my eyes also that’s bothering me.

Brief Answer:
Generally cyst causes no problem.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome to Ask A Doctor service.

I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Generally cyst causes no problem. If you find difficulty in vision, nasal obstruction, congestion, giddiness then do a contrast enhanced CT scan neck and pns. This cyst can be in the sphenoid Or ethomoid. It may new or old in nature.

You can go for functional endoscopic sinus surgery and get the cyst removed and sent for biopsy. Removing the cyst and sending for biopsy will be better. It will show what is the nature of the disease and you get relieved from above symptoms. So CECT neck and PNS. Plan for surgery and get it removed and sent for biopsy. Till then start fluticasone nasal spray to reduce inflammation and saline nasal spray to get rid of mucus secretion. Take steam inhalation.

Follow the advice and review if you have any queries.

Why would I need to biopsy the cyst? What is Cect and PNS mean?

Detailed Answer:
Biopsy is always needed to know the nature if the disease. Without biopsy you can't find out what is the type of the tissue. So it's always recommended to biopsy the cyst or tissue which we remove from the body. CECT is CT scan after giving contrast better than plain CT.

How would i get a cyst in that area with no sinus infections? I know it’s not very common to get it in the sphenoethmodial recess? My ent said it’s not a big deal at all, just mucus build up!
