Hello, I Have Had Varicose Veins For Quite A Long
Question: Hello, I have had varicose veins for quite a long time, maybe over 20 years. I have had the surgery to remove them on my left leg. I have worn compression socks religiously since 2007, "Class II" (15-20 mmHg/ 20.1-27 hPa). I have had very little pain or symtoms during that time. The most bothersome aspect, other than cosmetic, is that they hurt when a child sits on my leg or the dog jumps on my leg. Recently I have noticed that my symptoms are getting worse and worse. I have more pain, my leg seems to always be swollen, and the skin stretch tight (with contention). Then, a few days ago I had extreme pain in the middle of my shin. I couldn't sleep and although it got better I still have some pain days later. I saw my phlebologist/angiologist. It is not phlebitis, but "hypodermitis".
he asked me if I wear contention socks and I said I did. But, nobody has ever told me to go to Class III (20-36 mmHg ou 27.1-48 hPa) contention. I cannot get in touch with him and his secretary told me to make an appointment just to ask my question. I cannot get an appointment before December! So, here is my question:
Based on my explanation, should I be wearing 20-36 mmHg ou 27.1-48 hPa (Class III) Contention socks or are my 15-20 mmHg/ 20.1-27 hPa (Class II) still ok? Thanks

Brief Answer:
Continue with class 2 compression stockings.
Detailed Answer:
Hello dear, welcome to Ask a doctor service.
I read your query and here is my advice.
I think the compression stockings of 15-20mmHg are OK. You need a better evaluation from a specialist like your vascular surgeon to evaluate the conditions of your veins and decide if you need class 3 or not.
Class 3 can be taken only by doctor's prescription.
Hope I have answered the question.
Let me know if I can assist you further.
