Question: Hello, I am a woman who had unprotected intercourse with a man with a sore on his penis. He said it was nothing and I listened to him. Then he ejaculated inside me. Afterwards I got worried and he took a test and is herpes 2 positive. I understand the incubation period is 2 - 20 days. Is there anything I can do right away? I have acyclivor pills because I get herps 1 outbreaks. Will it help to have them now? I do not have an outbreak, but I have discomfort in my pelvic region. Thanks, Jena

Your sex partner may most likely to spread herpes to you when he has blisters and open sores on his body. But it's also possible to spread herpes to you when he does not have any symptoms. That is because herpes can be present on your body without causing any symptoms, like blisters or pain.

Ideally, antiviral therapy should be started as soon as possible after lesion appearance and within 72 hours. So it means when you develop new lesions or feeling pain you should start antiviral therapy (acyclovir). It is good that you have a supply of medication, it is important for you to know the symptoms of herpes can include tingling or paresthesias (numb) prior to the development of discrete lesions.

There is a limited study about using acyclovir before symptoms appear. So you should start when you have symptoms that appear like what I have mentioned above.

Thank you so much. My only symptom right now is swollen glands in my right groin, and some pain in my right ovary.

Is there anything else you would recommend?

I'll wait 2 weeks before taking the herpes test. I have had herpes 2 vaginal outbreaks in the past and I remember how they felt. I don't feel those changes happening for me, but perhaps they can still happen.

I hear you saying that taking the meds with no outbreak is not necessarily helpful.

I guess there's nothing I can do now but wait 2 weeks and see. Any other medical wisdom for me?

I've also simultaneously had a UTI infection, but that seems to be under control now. thank you xo

Thank you for your clarification. If you are having symptoms with swollen glands and pain you can start acyclovir right away. Groin swollen glands can also be caused by Herpes. If there is fever or any different kind of lesion then herpes please go to see your doctor for further evaluation. It is good that your UTI is undercontrolled. Because you have herpes vaginal outbreaks already so you will have a chance to get another one. If you have an outbreak more in a year, you may need suppressive therapy.

Thanks. I went to acupuncture and the pain in the groin is going down. My friend is arriving with the meds today. They are at my house and I'm away. Anything else I can do to lower the pain in the groin? That's my only symptom right now. Thanks :)

Hello, I got the acylivor. The pills are 800mg. I have about 10. Can you suggest how many to take per day? The bottle says 3 per day for 20 days, but I don't have that many left and I know 800mg is a big dose. The pain is a bit less even after one pill. Many thanks! If you start the dose 800mg three times daily you should use it for two days only. And if you choose 800mg twice daily you should use it for 5 days, or 400mg three times daily for five days. For pain relief you can try sit in the warm water for 20 mins, avoid tight cloth, take over the counter medicine such acetaminophen or ibuprofen.
