Hello Doctor I Have Been Advised To Start Full Weight-bearing

default
Posted on Sat, 14 Dec 2019
Question: Hello Doctor

I have been advised to start full weight-bearing after the surgery of my left foot following two fractures. Subsequent to 5 weeks of rest and partial weight-bearing, the orthopedic surgeon advised me to step on the foot. Since then I am experiencing pain and swelling when I try to walk. I have been practicing to walk without crutches for the last 3 days. While I was able to walk I am experiencing pain and my foot is getting is swollen. So far I have been avoiding to take painkiller to tolerate the pain. And I try to handle the swelling by lifting/elevating the leg at night which helps.

Is the pain normal? How long will it last?
Is the swelling normal? How long will this last?
Any other advice?

And I am doing regular sexual intercourse with 3 to 4 rounds per day without putting pressure on the leg. Will this affect the healing of leg?

When a complete healing following ORIF can be expected?

Regards

Detailed Answer:
Hi there

Thanks for the query

Usually delayed healing of the fracture or stiffness of joints can cause swelling at this time.

Better to get xrays to see what's going on.

The pain and swelling will subside in 1-2 months with physiotherapy.

No issues with intercourse if you do not apply any pressure on the operated foot.

Complete healing of fracture can take between 6-8 weeks but about 2-3 months including physiotherapy for good function.

I hope I have answered your query.

I will be available to answer your follow up queries

Thanks and regards.

Xrays

Detailed Answer:
Hi there,

I have reviewed your Xrays. It looks like there is more bony healing needed.

Everything else looks Okay. Take calcium and Vitamin D. Perform ankle ROM and stretching exercises to avoid stiffness. Repeat the X-ray in another 3 weeks to see the progress.

Regards

I have been applying full weight on my two legs and got rid of the two crutches a week ago. Is it okay to continue like this bearing in mind the remaining bony healing.

I do regular exercise but feel some pain and swelling. I have been taking Celecocib Cap 200mg (Celicoxx 200) but I have discovered that there are some risk factors with this. Please let me have your advice.

Please let me know which painkiller is more effective as I feel pain whenever I do exercises. I think diclofenac is not also advisable?
