Question: Hello Doc. I'm a 28 year old female and 3 months postpartum. Having hypothyroid too. Since 8th month of pregnancy, I've been taking 88 mcg eltroxin n continued taking until 2 month postpartum n realized that I haven't checked my thyroid for a while...I had some shortness of breath too... After reducing the dose to 75 mcg, this symptom disappeared.. After a month of taking 75 mcg, I developed shortness of breath again today...it was little severe...so went to ER...all my vitals were checked n found to be normal... ecg was also normal..my gynec suggested me to take echo as well...am disappointed with the findings of mitral valve regurgitation n tricuspid valve regurgitation...these observations were not there when I took echo (part of master checkup) two years back... I have attached my report as well. Please advise. Are they dangerous? Could they cause problems for me in future?

Brief Answer:
Nothing to worry as of now

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Welcome.
This is Dr Sameer, cardiologist.
I went through the echo report you have attached. The report shows that you have a congenital malformations in heart valve called as prolapsed mitral valve. This abnormality can cause regurgitation (back flow) in mitral valve.
You currently have trivial MR which is not significant.
I don't think you will have any problem because of heart during pregnancy.
Trivial tricuspid regurgitation is normal phenomenon and is physiological, so nothing to worry because of that too.
As you don't have any significant regurgitation currently, you do not need any treatment as of now from cardiology side.
Pregnancy is a phenomenon where flow of blood in body is high(hyperdynamic circulation), so during labour, some patients do develop some breathlessness or palpitations but these can be easily managed.
To conclude, don't worry from cardiology side, you don't fall in the high risk category and everything will be fine.
For future, this regurgitation can increase in severity and you have to follow up by doing a echo every year.

Take care.
Thanks and regards

Thank you for the detailed reply Doctor. How common are these two conditions among my age group? Is this a normal finding in majority population?

Detailed Answer:
Hi Vidhya,
Welcome back.
MVP(Mitral valve prolapse) is pretty common and is noticed accidentally during routine echo.
It occurs in around 2-3% of the population.
The echo features are very mild. We generally encounter patients during advanced disease like moderate or severe MR. So your disease is very mild and therefore nothing to worry as of now.
But please be in follow up and get echo done yearly.
Thanks and regards

Thank you Doctor. What are the possibilities of regurgitation getting severe in future?.. And what else can I do to keep my heart healthy in future

Brief Answer:
Yes their are chances

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Welcome back.
Yes their are chances that the regurgitation can increase in severity in future. It can also remain like this. None of this can be predicted and you just have to do echo every year to see the regurgitation.
You can not do anything to change the severity of the disease. It is a congenital deformity of the heart valve and you can not do anything about it.
Just be in follow up and if in future you develop any breathlessness, just report it to your doctor.
I hope you remain fine and symptom free.
If you have any questions in future, I'll be happy to help.
Thanks and regards
