Have Blocked Nose, Sore Throat.

default
Posted on Mon, 22 Apr 2013
Question: I have had flu. Just bit of a blocked nose, but my throat has been sore and really dry for the last couple of days. My mouth and lips are also very dry. I can eat and drink, but sometimes I can't swallow naturally - I have to really concentrate to be able to swallow. I'm drinking lots of water, but the relief is only for a minute or so, before the dryness returns. I have been going to the toilet a lot. For the past 3 nights I have been trying to sleep, but my body seems to wake me up very quickly. I wake up with palpitations, increased heart rate, short of breath and in a panic. I'm starting to suffer extreme anxiety with the lack of sleep. Despite my tiredness, I can't fall asleep now. I have also been vomitting. When this happens I get really sharp pains all through my body. I also feel very dizzy
I am 47 years old (female). I have suffered from extreme anxiety in the past, but many years ago. I have also had a heart operation many years ago. I used to suffer from pericarditis. Sometimes this has happened after a bad flu, so I'm worried that this might happen again, although I don't think this is the case this time.
I can feel the anxiety building up with the lack of sleep, and I'm not sure what to do. It's 3am, and I'm not sure if an out of hours doctor will be able to help or not. We have one at our hospital in XXXXXXX Keynes. Is there anything that can be done tonight if I go to an out of hours surgery?

Hello Natsoma and thanks for posting the query
I have read your query in detail. It seems that flu and other symptoms adding up to your anxiety and resulting in discomfort for you. Do not get panic and just be relaxed. Get treated for your flu and sore throat and follow certain instruction to get rid from the symptoms you are facing:
1. Sucking sugar free candy and chewing gum helps in getting rid form dry mouth and throat.
2. Regularly do lukewarm gargles 3-4 times a day.
3. Keep room vaporizer in the room to add up to the moisture.
4. Try to breath from nose as much as possible and do not breath from mouth. Block nose can create little problem to you but try to clear the pathway.

As per your anxiety and is concern consult your treating doctor so that he/she can prescribe you drugs for sleep or get counselling for proper treatment.

Pericarditis can be caused if flu and sore throat left untreated. If you are suffering from fever, cough with yellow sputum and chest pain; feel free to consult your doctor for treatment and precautions.

My last advice to you is that does not get panic and relax yourself as much as you can. You will feel better soon once you start getting treatment and following precautions.

Hope this will help you. Write back for any further follow up query.
Best Wishes
