I've read your description of his symptoms and I have to ask this question: are there any signs of heart failure like leg swelling or shortness of breath? What exactly do you mean by "retaining water"? If it's just urine in the bladder then it could be that his prostate is enlarged enough to block the passage of urine and cause many 'urgent' visits to the toilet without completely evacuating the bladder. If he has swollen legs or shortness of breath then heart failure is a potential diagnosis. Such patients commonly experience nocturnal symptoms - including an increase in toilet visits - because fluid returns to the circulation when the patient lies down.
Throwing up is not related to either disorder and I don't have any good explanation for it with the available information. If he keeps on vomiting then he should visit the ER for an urgent assessment.
