Question: HI, My 40 year old daughter in law is a few weeks pregnant with her first child. She is very very active - she river surfs (which is like ocean surfing but on a standing wave a river) 4 or 5 times a week all year. So a lot of falling in the water. She bikes and works out. She is about 5ft 2 in and 100 lbs and very lean and muscular 1) is surfing ok to do now and in later terms? 2) how long and how strenuous should her exercising be during the pregnancy, month by month. thanks

Brief Answer:
She can continue with her daily normal activities.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for trusting us with your health concern.
She can continue wit surfing during pregnancy as she is habitual to it. In case she feels nauseous or there is any abdominal pain or bleeding then she needs to have rest. Otherwise she can continue with the activities that do not cause an undue stress on her abdomen.
The extent of stress everyone can undertake differs from person to person. She can go for regular antenatal check ups to monitor the baby's growth and can do mild exercise involving the limbs. She can avoid abdominal exercises specially during the first 12 weeks.
Please feel free to discuss further. I will be glad to answer the follow up queries that you have.
Wishing you good health.

HI My daughter in law had mild bleeding went to the hospital - they say it was probably implantation bleeding - they did an ultasound and everything looked good. She is hypoglycemic and has low blood pressure - she is very active, athletic, muscular and cardi vascularly fit. Are there any recommendations you have for her? I was wondering about protein shakes or meal replacement drinks? Would it be a good idea for her to carry these with her for when she needs something. She has always had to eat or snack through out the day. Also being 40 years old are there other precautions she should take? thanks

Brief Answer:
She can have protein drinks.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
With the implantation bleeding it is best to stop any strenuous activity till the bleeding stops completely. Taking protein shakes or energy drinks is a good idea to avoid hypoglycaemia.
She needs to rule out all the congenital malformations also by under going level I scan at 13 weeks and level II scan at 18 weeks.
Regular antenatal supplements will also help.
Hope this answer is helpful.
Regards.
