Question: HELLO. I'm a 62 year old male. I lost close to 60 pounds and have been running 3 to 5 miles every day since late XXXXXXX I started at over 240 and now weigh about 190. I used to be a marathon runner back in my 30's and 40's. I quit running and gained a bunch of weight. I am concerned about being a diabetic. My last A1C was 6.3 and thought that'd be better after loosing all this weight. My BP has come way down to averages anywhere from 103/61 to120/71. I get much higher readings in the doctor's office. My resting pulse is anywhere from 42 up to 50. I test my glucose daily. I am not on any meds for diabetes. I get readings in the low 80's to mid to upper 90's quite a bit. I also get fasting glucose readings anywhere from 103 to 107 at times. Several readings after lunch (usually Subway) have been around of mid 90's and at times as high as 123 after some other types of meals. Tonight, I ate a bunch of sugar free pudding mixed with Cool Whip Lite. I got my highest read about 1.5 hours later at 138! (is this OK?). So, are my numbers OK and why would my A1C still be this high with my daily readings being pretty good most of the time. Thanks for listening. XXXXXXX XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
Pre diabetes status

Detailed Answer:
Good day,
Noted your concern.
your HbA1c and fasting blood glucose values are suggestive of PRE DIABETES status. Hba1c is an average glucose level over 2-3 months and your levels are in pre diabetes range. It means that your elevated fasting glucose is responsible for it. This is the natural progression. This may progress to the next stage where your post meal blood sugar also will start to go up.

Currently, you should start a regular exercise program and try to lose at least 5% of your weight. This would do wonders. Besides, you will also need a test called as 75 gram oral glucose tolerance test ( OGTT). This is to assess the chances of developing diabetes in future.
