Question: Folliculitis makes my days hard, especially in Summer. All over my leg and belly I have infected hairs. My dermatologist prescribed to me Wolff Tetracycline for 3 months. I don't want to take Antibiotics so long - term. I have read about the CBD oil and its positive effects on the skin. Should I try it? Or the sole solution would be the 3 months long taking tetracycline? Please advise me something. Thanks in advance!

Brief Answer:
CBD oil use is very vague, with no information on official medical sites on use for skin conditions. Some other tips to help in your case explained below

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome to 'Ask A Doctor' service,

I carefully read your query and understand your concern.

Folliculitis can be chronic especially in the legs and last for a long time and be very distressing to the patient.

As for CBD oil, this is a new drug and much study needs to go into it. FDA (Food and Drug Administration) has allowed research on it but yet there is not enough information on its effectiveness and potential risks.

I did not see any official mention of its use in skin problems but for anxiety, sleep problems, seizures, and joint pains. Because there is no mention in official medical sites of use of CBD oil in skin problems, I can not confirm its use in your case.

There are a few things that can be tried to help with it:

- Avoid plucking hair, shaving or waxing for at least 3 months. This will allow the hair to grow back normally and avoid the hair growing in the skin and causing pimples

- If you have a problem with the hair being dense and dark color and need to shave or remove hair, you may think of more permanent hair removal
- Avoid rubbing the skin, avoid tight clothes that may rub on your skin
- Avoid picking on the pimples or the hair follicles

- You may also try local treatment such as Benzaclin gel which has an antibiotic and a substance that may dry out the skin and reduce pimples. This may cause some local irritation and scales for a while but generally, the skin gets used to it in a while and patients tolerate it better soon.

- Oral antibiotics can be tried for a few weeks. I would say Minocycline is better tolerated and chances for photosensitivity are very slim compared to tetracycline. You may talk with your doctor to see the chance of having a prescription of minocycline for 4-6 weeks (this is something to try but not always treats the condition- local treatments are needed as well as mentioned above).

- If treatments do not help, the doctor may need to revise his diagnosis and other diagnoses may be considered as well and need to be ruled out

I hope this answers your query.
I remain at your disposal in case any further medical assistance is needed.
