Hello and welcome,

It is normal for sperm content of the semen to decline as men age. However, it is not normal to have no sperm at all.

As men age, the quality of sperm decrease, and there is significantly more risk of birth defects in the baby.

Unfortunately, there isn't good data to rely on as to what the sperm count should be at various ages. While the quality of the sperm declines with age, the existing data is mixed about age's impact on overall sperm count. The results of a variety of studies on sperm concentration as a function of age have produced widely different results.

Factors such as increased weight, tobacco use, alcohol use, stress, and some recreational drugs (marijuana, cocaine) are known to lower sperm count. Other causes include structural defects in the man's reproductive organs such as varicocele or defects in the transport tubules, endocrine (hormone) problems such as with production of follicle stimulating hormone or leutinizing hormone (these are pituitary hormones) or problems with thyroid or adrenal hormones, can also affect sperm count.

In addition, medications such as testosterone, chemotherapy, some antibiotics, and meds for GERD/peptic ulcers can lower sperm count.

There can be problems with testing sperm count too soon after the last ejaculation or after illness too.

I recommend having a repeat semen analysis done, and refrain from masturbation or sex for 3 days prior (or whatever the lab's protocol is) to having it done. And consider making an appointment with your doctor or a fertility specialist to discuss factors that can be modified.

I hope this information helps. Please let me know if I can provide further information.

Sorry I misunderstood. I thought you were talking about sperm rather than semen production.

If you are taking Flomax, that can definitely be the problem. It can decrease semen and cause abnormal ejaculation. Semen production does decrease with aging, but Flomax can make it more pronounced in some men.

I will assume you are taking Flomax for benign prostatic hyperplasia. If this is not correct, please let me know. There are alternatives medications for BPH, although other medications in the same class will have similar side effects. Some urologists will use Cialis, which is in a different class, and may have less of this side effect (although it has other side effect risks of its own). If the decreased semen production is concerning you, then do talk with your doctor about it as your doctor may consider a different medication.
