Does Sinusitis Cause Shortness Of Breath?

default
Posted on Mon, 18 Jul 2016
Question: HISTORY: I am suffering from shortness of breathing (sometimes, not all the days) since last 3 weeks. I was a smoker now I quite it. I used to suffer from cough since my childhood. I do Snoring during sleep.
ACTIVITY DONE: I have done some tests like: PFT, ECG, ECO, TMT, Chest X-Ray, all are normal. (If required I can attached all reports). Finally I consulted with one ENT Doctor, he has suggested to do "CT SCAN OF PARA NASAL SINUS" (report attached) and he asked that holes of nose are being blocked. This needs to be operated, and he gave me one spray "FLUTICONE-FT" to use.

QUESTIONS: 1) What is PARA NASAL SINUS and how this can affect breathing?
2) Whats the attached report "CT SCAN OF PARA NASAL SINUS" is saying?
3) Is it curable through medicines rather than operation for my case?
4) After taking MONTEK AB (1 tab after dinner, refer by different doctor) I feel good and feel breathing trouble very rare, In this context can u refer any medicine for PARA NASAL SINUS or will take FLUTICONE-FT as usual?
5) Pl share some good suggestion or recommendation from your end?

Brief Answer:
Most likely snoring/ sleep apnea, reflux and allergy.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for your query.

1. Para Nasal Sinuses (PNS) are air spaces within the skull bones that are connected to the nose.

2. Your CT PNS is within normal limits. More than 60-70% of the world's population has a mild deviated nasal septum. Small maxillary sinus polyps are very common and do not require treatment.

3. This means that you will respond to medication and surgery is unlikely. Upload images of the CT PNS for an accurate assessment.

4. Montek AB contains a bronchodilator. Repeat the PFT. Steroid nasal sprays (such as Fluticasone FT) require continuous use for a good effect. use it regularly along with Montek LC for at least 15 days along with steam inhalation and anti-reflux medication.

5. These symptoms are usually due to snoring, reflux and allergy. Get a sleep study and allergy tests done.

I hope that I have answered your query. If you have any more questions I will be available to answer them.

Regards.

Now what to do? (no problem since last few days). what is pft? r u recommending Montek LC along with spray? if yes then when to tale montek LC? or should I stop Montek AB?

Hi,

Thank you for writing back..

1. Take Montek LC once in a day (24 hours). The time is as per your convenience. The combined effect of this tablet, spray and steam inhalation is better than each taken alone. Stop the Montek AB. PFT (as you have mentioned as done in your first question are Pulmonary or lung Function Tests).

2. The allergy tests include AllergoSPT (skin prick test), Comprehensive blood allergy test with total serum IgE, Food Print and Immunocap testing. You will have to inquire locally. Check at Medica Superspecialty Hospital with Dr. XXXXXXX Dasgupta.

I hope that I have answered your query. If you have any more questions I will be available to answer them.

Thank You for your advice..
1) My breathing trouble last happened 10 days to 2 weeks back, now I hardly feel it. So pl suggest I will continue Montek LC for how many days? I had done PFT 2 weeks back (report attached).

2) If you need I can upload reports of (ECG, ECO, TMT, USG, Chest X-Ray, and other tests), I recently done executive health-Check. As per reports I have "per-diabetic" (Fasting-88, PP-193), "Fatty liver" and "PARA NASAL SINUS" other reports are normal. In this context can I conclude that breathing trouble was due to "PARA NASAL SINUS"?

3) Montek AB was referred by my local doctor (general physician) for breathing trouble ("PARA NASAL SINUS" test was not done that time). So Montek LC will rectify "PARA NASAL SINUS" also?

Hi,

Thank you for writing back..

1. Take Montek LC, nasal spray and steam inhalation for at least 15 days. The attached PFT report is normal.

2. Your breathing trouble and nasal obstruction is due to nasal congestion and lack of stamina. Start a light exercise and walks to build your stamina and control your pre-diabetes, fatty liver changes. Avoid tobacco and alcohol. Do this under the supervision of your physician.

3. Montek LC (in addition to the rest of the medication) will help reduce nasal congestion and relieving your breathing trouble.

I hope that I have answered your query. If you have any more questions I will be available to answer them.

Brief Answer:
Your current medication & lifestyle change is a step in the right direction

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for writing back.

1. You need to repeat a Stress Test after a few weeks of light exercise.

2. The fatigue / weakness may also be due to poor blood sugar control. Get an HbA1c test done.

3. Your current medication is fine. Use the nasal spray and take regular steam inhalation.

I hope that I have answered your query. If you have any more questions I will be available to answer them.

Regards.
