Does Radiation Therapy Help In Reducing Abdominal Girth And Leg Edema?

Posted on Tue, 19 Apr 2016
Question: I am 63 and they found cysts on my left and right ovaries. The right ovary had a cyst the size of my fist. My GP did a CA 125 and it came back 10. I am going to have surgery to take out the ovaries and probably all reproductive parts of my pelvis. I have had some +1 pitting edema in both ankles on occasion and my abdomen is distended and rigid. Do you think I will need radiation or chemo and will this operation help my abdomen girth go down

Brief Answer:
may not be cancer

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for your query.

As the cysts have been there for years and the CA 125 is normal, chances of cancer are low. But we need to see if the cysts are simple cysts or complex soli plus cystic. If complex, they can still be cancerous.

But still, Surgery should reduce the abdominal girth and the leg edema. If the final biopsy report comes back as benign then no need for chemo or radiation.

Hope this helps. I will be available for follow up.
Regards
