Does Intake Of Less Caffeine Increase The Availability Of Klonopin In The Body?

default
Posted on Tue, 11 Aug 2015
Question: Hi,
I am on Lexapro 5 mg, Klonopin 2 mg, Keppra 1000mg and Solian (amisulpride) 100mg. My psychiatrist is working in an "ocd like" symptom, this symptom is almost gone even if i still have some downsides, and now my psychiatrist would like to rise the level of Klonopin. For the while we decided yesterday to low the levels of coffee. I just would like to know if less coffee (less caffeine concentrations) can rise the plasma concentrations levels of Klonopin (less caffeine, more Klonopin in plasma).
Thanks, XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
yes it can

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Lowering or eliminating the caffeine can help in two ways. OCD symptoms are in the classification of anxiety symptoms and caffeine is a stimulant and can make any anxiety symptom worse.
Also caffeine speeds up the metabolism so can result in a more rapid clearance of certain other medications like klonopin.

Dear Dr. XXXXXXX XXXXXXX
Thank you for your answer. I just don't understand very well how clearance works, but i guess a more rapid clearance means that there is LESS Klonopin in the body system, am I right (since with the reduction of ceffeine i am interested in having less)? Can it be the same with Keppra?I am sorry because i don't understand well what clearance is. But what i mean in my last question is that with less caffeine i would like to have MORE Klonopin and Keppra in my body system, not less (there is a mistake in my question),
Thanks beforehand,
Best regards, XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
was not clear

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Sorry perhaps I was not clear in my answer. If you speed up metabolism with caffeine then you have less medications around and may need a higher dose. So if you decrease caffeine, thus slow down metabolism you will have more medication around for a longer time. Thus, decreasing caffeine could increase the levels of klonopin and keppra available to your body.
