Posted on Sat, 10 Dec 2016
Question: Hi, glad you are onboard. I have had a bout of pancreatitis for which my doc has prescribed Creon DR 12000 units per cap. The pharmacy instructions are to take 5 caps with meals, 3X per day. This strikes me as high, especially at the cost. I would like your feedback. BTW, I am a drinker age 78. Thanks,

I gave you wrong number for Amex. Pls reply and I will upload correct #. Thanx!

Brief Answer:
chronic pancreatitis

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
1) First of all you must stop drinking alcohol.
2) The reason is - normal tissue in pancreas is damaged and replaced by abnormal fibrous tissue due to alcoholism and this condition is known as chronic pancreatitis.
3) Abdominal pain and indigestion due to lack of pancreatic enzymes (abnormal pancreas) are primary symptoms of chronic pancreatitis.
4) Alcohol affect liver and stomach also. What was status of liver structure in your last CT scan or USG abdomen?
5) If you feel burning pain in center of upper abdomen/ chest during fasting then you should also do upper GI endoscopy to rule out alcohol associated gastritis
6) About Tab. Creon - you must take it with food to promote digestion. Dosage is approx. 72000 U at each meal for adult patient. Thus your dosage requirement is low in fact compare to normal adult dosage.
7) Also take care not to include more fat containing food in diet.
