Brief Answer:
Yes, the dominant follicle usually contain the best egg in it.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thanks for writing to us about it.

I can understand your concern here.

Yes, usually dominant follicle contains best egg in it (I think you want to ask here, whether it is fertilized or not).

But it is not always happening that dominant follicle egg is always fertilized. (the chances of pregnancy in one cycle is only 26%)

For rupture during ovulation dominant follicle size should be around 18-36 mm in non medicated cycles and 15-18 mm in medicated cycle.

Hope it is helpful, feel free to ask more.

Good luck.

Thanks, I am now on day 10 of my cycle and the dominant follicle measured about 17mm and i was given the trigger to take later on with a view to egg collection a day after tomorrow. I asked my fertility specialist if this was not too early and she said no and that she wanted to catch the egg before I ovulated. I normally get an ovulation surge on day 13 or 14 and i have been tracking this for years. My question is would the egg be matured enough for collection on day 12 as planned. My fertility adviser says yes but I am worried and needed a second assurance about this and follicle size. By the way, I am doing a natural cycle IVF with no drugs whatsoever apart from the trigger I received today. By the way, I have no fertility issues but just tryong to have a child with use of donor sperm. Thanks

Brief Answer:
Yes, Your fertility specialist opinion is right.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Nice to hear from you once again.

Sorry for delay in my response!

In my opinion your fertility specialist opinion is right as your follicle size is 17 mm already on day 10th.

Trigger shot given on 8,10,12 day usually depend on follicle size.

So please do not take any stress.

Best of luck for your future outcome.

Good day.

My final question. I had the trigger shot with the dominant follicle measuring 17mm and egg collection was this morning. As it was a natural IVF cycle with no stimulation of the ovaries, I expected to get one egg but I was told they managed to get a smaller one at 12mm as well as the dominant one at 20mm. Would a 12mm be mature enough to fertilise?

Also a day 3 transfer is proposed due to natural ivf. Is they any advantage in doing an embryo transfer at day 3 when at day 3 the embryo should still be in the fallopian tubes and not the uterus. What i mean is that does putting an embryo in the uterus at day 3 affects its progress in any way since it does not belong there at this stage. Thanks

Brief Answer:
embryos can transferred at day 3 or day 5

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Sorry for a long delay in my response, it is due to bad weather my net is not working properly.

Here are the answers of your queries and I appreciate your knowledge about it.

- Yes it is true that 15-18 mm size is considered appropriate size to fertilise properly.

- With new theory embryos can transferred at day 3 or day 5.

It may depend upon your treating doctor and conditions in lab where embryos grow because after day 3 some critical nutrients are necessary for growth of embryo.
If few dominant follicles are there, then also it will transferred at day 3 because growth inside the uterus is more appropriate.
Some labs are not having facility to grow embryo upto blastocyst ( day 5) stage.

Hope it is useful, any further query please ask.

If you want to close the discussion please accept the answer before closing.

Thanks

Best of luck for your future outcome.
