Question: Greetings. Both my wife and I in our late fifties have been told we have some non alcohol fatty liver. Like everyone else we could lose more than 50 pounds. We both take milk thistle which is said to help fatty liver, and try to watch consumption of refined starches in foods to reduce A1C. I have also heard that taking some cinnamon capsules every day with bread or any other problem foods. What is your view about the problem of fatty liver etc? Thank you

Brief Answer:
Fatty liver is not a abnormal finding.Do not worry.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Welcome to HCM.

I have gone through your query and understand the concern.

Here, I would like to say that fatty liver is not a alarming finding. It indicates fatty tissue deposition on the liver like in all men who have fatty or pendulous abdomen. Therefore I wouldn't be personally worried about this finding.

Here, I would like to ask some more questions regarding the fatty liver.

May I know you and your wife's height and weight?
Do you have any clinical symptoms?
Have you visited some local doctor for the same?

Generally, fatty liver condition is a kind of obesity of liver with grade-I and II fatty liver is completely reversible in the initial stages especially, by following below mentioned corrective measures what you have asked.

1) do regular exercise or brisk walk at least 30 minutes per day

2) Avoid junk foods and fast foods,

3) Also take low fat and high protein diet.

4) You should take more fresh fruits and vegetables.

However, there is no such a time limit on when to have a repeat ultrasound scan but it can be repeated after 3 months following above corrective measures to check the liver status along with some liver function tests (SGPT,SGOT)

From all the above discussion, here I want to say that fatty liver is actually a obesity of liver just like when person put on some extra weight, termed as grade-i obesity which is obviously not abnormal nowadays. So be rested and do not worry much.

Hope this information will help you.

Thank you very much for clear reply. Our SGOT and SGPT are in normal lab ranges (so far) and we have no specific clinical symptoms. Dieting has been difficult, as it is for most Americans, despite all the advertising to the contrary!

For our height we both need to lose fifty or sixty pounds. My own weight has (unfortunately) not gone down or up in a number of years. And my wife has unfortunately gained some weight in the last couple of years.

Brief Answer:
Need to loose weight.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for sharing more information.

If you have no clinical symptoms and both highly sensitive liver function tests are normal then there is no need to worry about fatty liver which is not a abnormal findings as I said earlier.

You both need to reduce some weight and this most likely may reduce some fatty depositions from liver. Fatty liver is completely reversible position if you put in some efforts to shed weight.

Hope this helps and let me know if you have more doubts.
