Posted on Thu, 13 Oct 2016
Question: My dad died yesterday, he was sitting on the toilet. He was suffering from COPD in the last stage. He yelled at me and said, "come unbuttoned it". I said dad there's nothing to unbutton. He said, I need air, I turned the fan on him, as usual on low and asked him if that was ok, he said, "too much" so I turned it away some. We did these steps every time he went to the bathroom. Then he never answered me and I ran to him he fell on over into my arms, I was yelling for my mom to call 911, she was too slow, I had to lay him down in the floor and run get the phone. When I got back to him, she was on the floor talking to him he was trying to shake his head yes to her question. The 911 operator told me to start CPR I did he was conscious for a few seconds then he was out, there was no pulse according to my cousin who came in and checked he took over cpr until the emts arrived. They said he never did come back on the way to the hospital. Did my daddy feel pain, did he KNOW WHAT was happening. Sorry for the long post, he was my best friend. I am dying inside

Brief Answer:
Condolences. Most likely no pain for your father

Detailed Answer:
Dear Patient,

first i'd like to express my condolences.

Regarding your questions, it is most likely a sudden respiratory/ cardiac failure due to copd. He might have known to some extend what was going on, in that case it all went so quick that your dad had most likely no suffering from pain.
Hope this clarifies things for you a Little bit, wishing you all the best in this difficult time for you and your Family.

Best regards
