Does A Swollen Lymph Node Under My Ear Mean A Sign Of Lymphoma?

Posted on Tue, 20 Apr 2021
Question: Hello, I have a lymph node under my ear, close to my jaw, it measures 3.5 cm. I have no fever, night sweats or weight loss. I had an ultrasound and In the report, one line which concerned me was “abnormal lymph node architecture”. Can you please explain what this means? Does it automatically mean lymphoma? Is the size of this lymph node abnormally large?
Thank you

Brief Answer:
Abnormal Lymph node architecture

Detailed Answer:

Hello,

A single lymph node enlargement and abnormal architecture is not confirmative of lymphoma. It can occur due to several other reasons like previous infections, current active infection, tuberculosis etc.

You do not need to worry at this point especially since you do not have any concerning symptoms.

However, it is important to undergo the biopsy as scheduled to identify the underlying cause.

Hope this answers your question

Hello I have a follow up question,

As mentioned, my lymph node is 3.5 cm. I feel like this is this is abnormally large. Is there a chance that something benign can cause it to get you big?

Thank you

Answer detailed below

Detailed Answer:
Hi again

Lymph node enlargement more than 2 cm is concerning. However, in your case since there are no other lymph node involvement there is not much reason to worry about. Please relax and follow up as scheduled for the biopsy. There are cases of infections like tuberculosis and other conditions like sarcoisosis causing large lymph nodes.
