Posted on Fri, 12 Jan 2024
Question: I had a foley catheter put in because I could not urinate . I had notice dark urine when I could pee without the
catheter, when I had the catheter I had days where it was dark blood with small clots, I am seeing a new urologist what I a wondering is it the catheter making me bleed like that?

Do Catheters continue to have blood in the bag because of irritation or what else
could it be infection etc.

Brief Answer:
Catheter irritation gives bleeding only for couple of days.

Detailed Answer:

Hello,

I read it carefully and I understand your concern.

The placement of the catheter usually gives a little bleeding the first 2 days.
Unless it has perforated your bladder (but you would have had a lot of pain with urination in this case) it is not much possible that you have the bleeding from it.

So in order to understand what is bleeding in your bladder you need to do a cystoscopic exam which can watch with a camera inside your bladder.

As I said above, it can be a big damage from the first placement of the catheter (not much possible without pain) or be a mass which is bleeding, or a big stone in the bladder which moves around and causes irritation.

I hope this is helpful.
Let me know if you have other questions or concerns.
