Question: Hi, my husband is on some new drugs zyprexa and remeron. These were started by the phychiatrist during a current inpatient stay for his Alzhiemer's with severe anger outburst. He now has a far away look and I feel he is not engaged with surroundings. Is this normal with these drugs?

Brief Answer:
The drugs for dementia should be added

Detailed Answer:
Hi, thanks for asking from HCM

I can understand your concern. Zyprexa is Olanzapine and is an antipsychotic. The drug is probably used in his case to reduce anger outbursts and to stabilise his mood. Remeron is Mirtazapine and is an antidepressant. The drug is also used for improvement of mood in Alzheimer's patients sometimes. Considering his current situation as far away look or no engaging with surrounding, I don't think the drugs are the cause of this condition. Most probably this is occurring due to persistence of symptoms and proper dose adjustments are needed or some other drug especially for dementia should be added in his prescription. Donepezil or Memantin for dementia and Risperidone in place of Olanzapine for control of aggression should work. So in next appointment you can discuss with his doctor for these drugs and he should surely improve.

Thanks, Hope this helps you, if you have more doubts you can ask again.
