Question: Good morning, I happen to be one of the many people that suffers from depression to a point that it is hard to even leave the house. I am also a heart patient with 2 stints in one artery. My life has fallen to a downward spiral for at least 18 years. My sleeping is not reliable either. I feel very isolated as I do not want to be a burden on another family or friend...although I know I am. For depression I take 300mg of wellburtrin in the morning and 40mg of celexa at night. I also take xanex as needed, like preparing for something that gives me great anxiety, but I mostly take it at night to help me relax and sleep. My heart meds are: ,81mg bayer aspirin, carvedilol 3.125mg am and pm, Citalopram Hydrobromide 40mg, Atorvastatin Calcium 80mg, and Lisinopril 2.5mg. After sharing with my psychiatrist, she suggested Trazodone for sleeping. I have taken it before several years back and have no idea why I discontinued it. My questions are: If Trazodone is an antidepressant, should I also continue to take 40mg of celexa too? Can I slowly discontinue celexa and stay with Trazadone? Do these medications interact alright with one another? Already 5 of my meds have caused huge weight gain, which...to be honest...does not help with depression when nothing fits. I feel lost, overwhelmed, hard to make decisions, harder to truly care and be enthused about anything. Planning and staying focused on anything is a challenge. So, Celexa/Trazodone slow trade off? I thank you for your time to care. I laid my dad to rest last week and am planning grief counseling. I am deeply hurting and missing out on my own life and that of my children and grandchildren.....

Brief Answer:
Trazodone can be taken without worries.

Detailed Answer:
Hello, thanks for asking from HealthcareMagic,

Yes, you can take Trazodone with Celexa, no need to worry. The drug will supplement Celexa and will help in sleep too.

Trazodone alone would not help much to control the depression symptoms. You have to take Celexa or any other first-line drug to get relief.

Yes, there are a few risks of interactions and risk of serotonin syndrome but that is usually seen in very high doses.

You can take Trazodone without worries. Trazodone will help in improving the depression and sleep and will not increase the risk of weight gain.

Let me know if I can assist you further.

Thanks and Take care
