default
Posted on Mon, 2 Mar 2015
Question: If you are in REM sleep does that mean u had to go thru NREM first to get there, or can it be skipped over?

Brief Answer:
In a normal sleep cycle, REM sleep phase comes after NREM sleep phase.

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX,
Thanks for being on healthcaremagic.com.
I am Dr.Ajay Panwar, a neurologist, here to answer your query.

In a normal sleep cycle,1st phase of sleep is NREM sleep. After 1 hour of NREM sleep after the sleep onset, REM sleep takes over and then both these phases keeps alternating through the whole sleep duration, thus constituting a REM-NREM sleep cycle.

If REM sleep phase onset occurs rapidly,in less than 30 minutes of the NREM phase after the onset of sleep-it is pathological. Some of the pathological causes of rapid onset REM sleep are Depression,Narcolepsy or some circadian rhythm disorders.

So,if NREM phase is very short(skipping over is a far off thing),and REM phase comes early,it is not normal and always pathological.

Hope I have answered your query. If you have some follow up queries,I shall be glad to answer else, please close the thread, rate it and write a review.

How do I know if Im skipping NREM
doctor
Answered by Dr. Ajay Panwar (2 hours later)
Brief Answer:
Sudden onset muscle atonia causing falls.

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX,
Thanks for being in follow-up.
Patients with rapid onset REM have typical features of REM intruding in their day to day life, like muscle atonia. People with narcolepsy suffer from sudden onset falls due to muscle atonia, like this moment they are standing and next moment they fall without losing their consciousness, because they lose all their body tone.

Such people may also suffer from paralysis just after after awakening from sleep.

I'm sure you are not having any of such symptoms.Don't just panic.

Hope I have answered your query,If you have follow-up queries,I shall be glad to answer else, please close the thread-rate it and write a review.

Well some nights when I sleep I dream a lot & wake up at normal time but feel maybe not as rested. So Im wondering if my sleep is ok
doctor
Answered by Dr. Ajay Panwar (18 minutes later)
Brief Answer:
This is normal and physiological.

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX,
Thanks for being in follow-up.

I can understand that you appear to have done a lot of research about vivid dreams on internet, but let me tell you that just observing some vivid imagery without any other features of sleep abnormalities like violent behaviour during sleep, sleep walking or sleep terrors does not make your sleep abnormal.Vivid dreams can even be a part of normal life and increased on special situations like changing jobs, grand success events, marriage, pregnancy and likewise.Even some food items and some medications may cause them.
Lack of cataplexy and sleep paralysis rules out narcolepsy.Do you have excessive daytime somnolence. If no,you are perfectly normal.

WHAT YOU ARE DESCRIBING OFTEN OCCURS WITH ALMOST EVERONE OF US.

Hope I have answered your query,If you have follow-up queries,I shall be glad to answer else, please close the thread-rate it and write a review.

Brief Answer:
A life full of unknown fears kills precious time. Please don't be afraid.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for being in follow-up.

2 cm size is small for a pineal cyst to cause any damage. Even if the size increases in future, and cause significant problems, it can be surgically removed. However, clinically it is observed that such cysts usually don't increase in size much and stay like that for years without causing any problems.

Life is full of things which can't be predicted. If we start living life, fearing for the unknown that may happen sometimes-our life will be hell. So, please live your life freely without any stress. That is the mantra to a happy life.

Hope I have answered your query. If you have follow-up queries, I shall be glad to answer else, please close the thread-rate it and write a review.

Brief Answer:
It is learnt from the clinical experience. Don't worry.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for being in follow-up.

It is learnt from the long years of clinical experience. You don't need any further MRI unless you develop any neurological deficit or symptoms.

Hope I have answered your query. If you have follow-up queries, I shall be glad to answer else, please close the thread-rate it and write a review.

Please don't worry and live happy. You can trust them well.
