Question: I am 66 yrs old. I've been trying to loose a little weight each month,1-2 lbs, and have been successful. However, I have a hietal hernia and have been taking prilosec otc. The doctor gave me a perscription for operazole, 40 mg. twice a day. I can't seem to loose any weight, just gained 6-7 lbs this last 3 wks and feel very bloated, my stomach feels huge. I also feel like my colon is full all the time. I also take savella for fybromyalgia and celexa for depression. My blood pressure has risen over the last 6 months. It's been around 158/94 up to 168/91. Just wondering if this new perscription he has given me could possible be making me feel sluggish, weight gain, bloating, etc. I have no more acid reflux or heart burn, but starting to feel like something is wrong.
Brief Answer:
To rule out possibility of Hypothyroidism

Hi
Welcome to Healthcare-Magic
Greetings of the day
Dear Ms
Omeprazole is a proton pump inhibitor. I suppresses the secretion of gastric acid.
It does not affect the metabolism or induces weight gain.
Presence of bloating sensation is likely to be due to gastric distension and inability to expel it out because of associated spasm of lower oesophageal sphincter.
At this juncture , i would suggest you to rule out associated Hypothyroidism which could explain many of the symptoms.
I would suggest you the following plan of management
1. Consume plenty of water: 3 liter of water per day
2. High fiber diet: 2 servings of vegetable salad a day. Two servings of fruits a day
3. Laxative like Lactulose will be helpful in management of constipation
In case you need any further assistance kindly get back to me, will be glad to assist you.
Take Care
