Does Dextroamphetamine Interact With Phenylephrine?

default
Posted on Mon, 17 Oct 2016
Question: Hi, I am currently taking generic adderall (25mg 2x/day) for adhd and would like to know if it would be safe to take Vick's Nyquil Sinex (2 capsules @ 325 mg acetaminophen, 6.25 mg doxylamine succinate, 5 mg phenylephrine HCl per capsule) 7+ hrs after my second dose of adhd meds. I have come down with a really rough head cold and am in need of some relief from the pressure/pain. Normally, I would just forgo any decongestant or other med but this one is proving to be rather exhausting. Thanks in advance for any help you're able to offer.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Welcome and thanks for your query.
There's adverse interactions between dextroamphetamine and phenylephrine. Sedation is increased and blood pressure and heart rate also may increase.
If you feel uncomfortable, it would be better to avoid Nyquil sinus and use a topical decongestant like Otrivin nasal spray and an antihistamine like desloratidine. You can use acetaminophen in addition depending on the need.
Along that eat healthy wholesome food and drink plenty of warm fluids.
Do get back to me if you have further questions.
Wish you quick recovery.

Thanks for the quick response and I'll definitely avoid the Nyquil just to be safe. I was wondering if diphenhydramine hcl would be a suitable substitute for the antihistamine you mentioned...coupled with recommended dose for acetaminophen for pain

Brief Answer:
Welcome

Detailed Answer:
Diphenhydramine has adverse interactions with dextroamphetamine like increased sedation and increased blood level and effect of dextroamphetamine by its effect on liver enzymes. So it would be better to use an antihistamine without these interactions.

Thanks so much for your help. I'll stick w/ the acetaminophen and look for alternative antihistamines. One last quick question: are there any "evening friendly" decongestants that would be safe to use while taking adhd meds or maybe something I could safely combine w/ the desloratidine to facilitate better sleep (other than the topical you mentioned earlier)?
