Does Cetrizine For Allergic Rhinitis Cause Prostate Hyperplasia?

Question: I have allergic rhinitis for over 10 years now, and have been using cetirizine and levo-cetirizine quite frequently. I am male, 41. There is a slight increase in my prostate size (25 gms). Some doctors feel long term antihistamine use could have started the BHP little early. I still have the allergic rhinitis problem. Which alternate medicines could I take for the allergy? Is Montair better ? Pls advise.

1. Allergic rhinitis needs life time treatment and follow ups to prevent complications like sinusitis, asthma or allergic polyp.

2. Milder form can be manged with nasal sprays, severe forms with oral steroids and prophylactic anti allergic (montelukast).

4. citrizine (antihistamine) will not cause benign prostate hyperplasia.

Thanks for your advice. Your assessment is good. I have tried several courses of treatment - homeopathic as well as allergy testing and allopathic.

My symptoms are not very severe now; I am managing with these medicines with general advice from my family doctor.

Your advice on below will be very helpful
- I normally need some medicine after every 2-3 days. Is it better to take cetirizine or Montair ?
- Nasal sprays do not seem to have that much effect.

Answers for your queries.

1. Take montair-lc (citrizine with motelukst) combination daily one tab at bed time for a period of 2-4 months. After a certain period, it has to be stopped in tapering manner by your treating doctor.

2. Usually, nasal sprays works after prolonged usage of at least 1 month. so, continue as per your treating doctor.
