Question: I am asking for my son who is currently incarcerated with minimal care... My son is 42 and has been diabetic for 12 years or so. The ? I have is his morning #'s are 60-90 b4 befast arount 6am. his #'s flex from 200-300 throughout the day. He takes 40 units of Lantus @ 6am and 45 units of lantus at 4pm before dinner + 5units ofregular, if needed. He thinks he has to be around 300 blood/sugar at night so that he does not crash? Do you have any suggestions, it is really hard since the prison does not check on him as often as they should? Any advice would be appreciated!

Brief Answer:
No need to keep high blood sugar at night.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
It is always recommended to keep a study state of blood sugar 24 hour. There is no need to keep the blood sugar in 300 range in the night, in some people there is certain medical conditions where they may go in to hypoglycaemia in night and in that condition the night dose can be reduced rather than setting the blood sugar high.
As of now you can check morning blood sugar and titrate the dose accordingly.
If you are suspecting low blood sugar in the night which may manifest as abnormal sweating and fatigue, check your the blood sugar at 2AM, and 5 AM and if it is abnormally low dose re adjustment may be required.
Thanks.
