Do Large Hip Marks From An Injury Cause A Delay In Hip Surgery?

default
Posted on Tue, 5 Apr 2016
Question: I am going to have left hip replacement surgery in two weeks. About two weeks ago I fell out of bed and hit my backside on the side of my night table. My backside is still slightly swollen and I have a large black, blue and purple mark on the backside and going into the crack. Will this mark prevent me from having hip surgery if it is still there in two weeks?

Brief Answer:
It may delay your surgery

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
I have studied your case. If there is any blood collection in the tissue that it can cause such color change. It should not come in between incision, as it can increase wound complication. If your surgeon uses posterior incision that he may asked you to wait for two more weeks.
I would also like to know if you are on blood thinners. As it can also cause such blood collection. If yes then you need to stop tgem after your doctor's opinion.
I think there is no harm in waiting for two more weeks. It will ensure a safe surgery. I hope this answer will be useful for you. let me know if there is any other followup questions. thanks

I am not on any blood thinners. I know this is hard to answer, but do you think this black and blue mark would disappear by the time I have surgery, which is Feb. 17th.? I really do not want to delay the surgery, as I cannot walk now.

Brief Answer:
It would be better if you can start antibiotics earlier

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
If you do not want to delay surgery then you can start early antibiotics after discussion with your surgeon. I can not say that when this will disappear but it can take two to three weeks since date of injury. It is good that you are not on blood thinner so this makes things little easy.
Thanks
