Do Clopidogrel, Tamsulosin And Buspirone Cause False Positive Results For Opiates?

Posted on Tue, 23 Jun 2015
Question: Hello. I have been taking opiate drug screenings under a pain contract with my doctor. Is there anything in the following list of medications that could cause a false-positive? I have been prescribed 2 5/500 oxycodone for at night before bed, and 3 10mg oxycontin slow release tablets and I have been taking them as prescribed and have still somehow failed a monthly drug test. Any ideas?
Aleve, IC clopidogrel, Tamsulosin, IC Buspirone, Lipitor, Cymbalta, Metformin, Prilosec, gabapentin, atenolol, and Lisinopril (exhaustive list, I know).
Thank you very much, sir/madam.

Brief Answer:
Do you mean false positive or false negative?

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thank you so much for this query.

I am so sorry to hear about this problem you have with your urine testing. However, more precision is needed to understand what the exact problem is. I will like you to look into the information below and choose what applies to you.

1. You did a urine test and it showed no opiates in the results though you are on opiates(false negative) or

2. Your test result is positive of which you do not think it should be positive(False positive)

The response would depend on what you say because it is not immediately clear to me from reading your question.

I hope to hear from you and would provide a detailed response promptly and accordingly. Until then, I wish you well.

Dr. Ditah,

My situation is regarding the false-negative aspect (option 1). There should have been opiates in my urine test and the results came back negative. Thank you for asking for clarification.

Sincerely,

Brief Answer:
I will request that the test be repeated.

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thanks for this follow up precision.

It is very disturbing when negative results can get your doctors to think that you are using your medications for other purposes. The first and most common cause for false negative is a mistake in the laboratory procedure. I will request that the test be repeated and if possibly in two different laboratories for consistency and to serve as a check. Laboratories do make mistakes and because you are very sure that you take the drugs as prescribed, this would be a good start.

Besides, have you ever had drug testing done before or is this the very first test that you had?

I wish you well and hope to hear from you.
