Our son, age 19, develops a exceedingly strong stench from the body after work out. It is not regular smell from sweating, but something that resembles more some complex organic chemical. His diet is heavy on spices.

Thanks for the query.

1. Skin act as an excretory organ and will excrete some of the unwanted substances from body. Since you noticed different kind of smell from his sweating, this may be due to chemicals used in diet or due to bacterial action on sweat glands.

2. Since he is getting after work out ask him to shower soon after he has exercised using an anti-bacterial soap specially in arm pits. This is to prevent bacterial action on the glands. Also ask him to wear cotton shirts when exercising as it will absorb more of his sweat.

3. Spices with additive agents can also cause change in smell, so ask him to try other food for some days and check for the smell. If present then can avoid particular food stuff.

Even changes in metabolism can results in different type of smell in sweat. But this can be noticed in early childhood days. So we can rule out this condition now in him.

Hope I answered your question. Consult your doctor for further examination and management.
Feel free to ask me if you have any further queries.

Wish you good health. Take care.
