Question: MY SON XXXXXXX MALE / 14.5 YEARS SUFFERING FROM LEFT SIDED ULCERATIVE COLITUS SINCE LAST 8 MONTHS, NOW DOCTOR ADVICE TO TAKE AZORAN 50 TWICE DAILY. I WANT TO KNOW IS IT LIKE STEROIDS & WHAT IS THE SIDE EFFECTS OF AZORAN.

History of Since XXXXXXX childhood, he is suffering from Chest Congestion like Asthma but only during the change of weather. He took allopathic medicines and many times he took light steroids also. Several times homeopathy medicines also provided but didn’t get fruitful result.

After consultation with several Doctors, during the month of May 2011, he had underwent surgery for Septoplasty with Adenoidectomy (Right DNS with Adenoids) . After the surgery, chest congestion was not happened till date.

Now, 1st August, 2011 to till date, at the time of latrine, fresh blood found in his stool .This was consulted with several Gastro Doctors and several tests like Colonoscopy. During test, it was found that he is suffering from left sided Ulcerative Colitis . Since last 8 months he took like Mesacol 1.2mg twice in a day, Steroids Omnacortil / wyselone (30,20,10,5mg), also took mesacol enema, steroids enema, entofoam enema. After giving all this treatment, the blood strength some time reduced in stool in the shape some clotted blood or ( after two or three days or daily also ) but overall didn’t get fruitful result ( blood is still coming daily or some time after 1-2 days ). He is passing stool 2 to 4 times daily ( with semi solid stool ).

Due to change of weather , now he is suffering again chest congestion also.

It is good to know that XXXXXXX is apparently cured of chest congestion, the recent recurrance could be due to reduced immunity

For Ulcerative collitis Azoran is used for preventing remissions as he is having the symptoms even after the trials of steroids

Although the dose of Azathioprine that he is taking (100 mg) may be correct, the dose needs to be adjusted to your body weight.

I usually prescribe Azathioprine in the dose of 2.0 - 2.5 mg/kg body weight to my patients with Ulcerative colitis, ensuring that they have 3 monthly blood tests as part of safety monitoring.

This is the dose that has been shown to be effective in maintaining remission of the disease in large clinical trials in the Western World.
