Can Withdrawal From Opiates Induce An Abortion?

default
Posted on Thu, 8 Jan 2015
Question: I just found out that I am pregnant. I am 37, and I had chiari decompression surgery 7/11/14. I also had a premature baby in the past (31 weeker)... How concerned should I be?

Also, I have been an opiate dependent pt for years, and thd pharmacies are out of my meds and I will withdraw before they get them. What risk of spontaneous abortion is there from withdrawal this early?

Brief Answer:
Details below.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for trusting us with your health concern.
Withdrawal from opiates can induce an abortion in 5-7% cases only. But continuing taking opiates is detrimental for the fetal growth and development.
The surgery that you had is not likely to have any effect on your present pregnancy.
Since there is a history of premature delivery at 31 weeks the chance of preterm labor is there. You need to have a regular antenatal check up with your gynecologist and avoid all the predisposing factors like heavy work and urinary infections.
Please feel free to discuss further. I will be glad to answer the follow up queries that you have.
Wishing you good health.
