Can Steroids Cause Osteoporosis?

default
Posted on Tue, 6 Sep 2016
Question: My sister has taking Atripla + Bactrim and now the doctor prescribed steroid #100 for twenty days. I have read steroid probably will make her bone so weak so she is planning to take the following supplements:
1. Vitamin D3 1000UI
2. Ca and Mg supplement
3. Vitamin B complex
4. Olive leaf extract
My questions are:
1. What will be the do's and don't do's taking those supplements with the medications which she is on?
2. Is there any diet restrictions? because she is vegetarian for the time being and I'm telling her to eat meat and milk too otherwise she cannot manage the side effects on her burning stomach.

Thank you
doctor

Brief Answer:
Here is some info about steroids.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thanks for writing to Health Care Magic, I am Dr Muhammd Ahmad, I have closely read your question and I understand your concerns, I will hereby guide you regarding your health related problem.

There is no particular interactions between any medication, and the supplements which are being planned to be taken.

Yes bone weakening is gonna be an important side effect to take care of and it can be done simply be done by using high calcium food and supplement.

In diet proteins can be taken from plant sources too red beans are very very good source of plant protein. If she eats bisuits and cakes then she can eat egg whites as well which are very clean source of proteins.

The most important diet restriction is salt. She has to take care of her salt intake she can only take three quarters of a tea spoon in a whole day not more than this, steroids can increase weight and can retain salt in body so this has to be taken in conisderation while taking salt from outside sources.

She should stay physically active and it will help countering side effects. She should take care as she can be prone to infections, her immunity will be at lower side while taking steroids. 20days aren't going to cause big effects on her body though but still taking care is always advised.

I hope this answered your question, if you have more feel free to ask, otherwise close the discussion and rate it.
