Posted on Fri, 15 Apr 2016
Question: I had a colonoscopy done and the doctor said he found a large polyp in my small intestine I was to tired from the anaesthesia to ask what a polyp ment.....I googled it even though I was told never to do that and now I no why. My question is could I have cancer? Colon cancer runs in my family I have a 1st aunt and 1st uncle that had but from what I read is it only hereditary if it's your mother or father who has it? I go next week for the test results but I keep having panic attacks thinking about it.

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thank you for asking.

You are reporting to have removed a polyp by colonoscopy.
First of all please relax a polyp doesn't mean cancer. A polyp is a benign growth of colon mucosa . Once it is removed everything is Ok.
The second is that you are too young for colon cancer.
With regards to the heredity not only the parents are involved but also aunt and uncle too.

Please relax and wait for colonoscopy result.

Thank you. The whole reason I went to have the scope done was because for the past 4 years, around the time I had my daughter I have been having horrible pain from my anus up into my belly button after I have a bowel movement. It only happens a few times a month and can last anywhere from 30 minutes to 4 hours sometimes longer. I had my follow up appointment today and the biopsies they took are all fine. My doctor told me I have what is called Protalgia Fugax and that he is not able to help me but said he can refer me to a gastroenterologist that knows more about it. He did not however tell me what it was, how I got it, or most importantly how I can get it to go away. If you are able to help give me some insight at all I would be so grateful.

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thank you for giving me.more of your medical information.

You are reporting to have done colonoscopy and everything was normal plus biopsy normal.

Proctalgia Fugax is being condition. It is caused by spasms of levator ani muscle and has rarely anal pain as in your case.
Meantime I suggest to :
- use warm sitz bath or warm water enema when the atack is ready to start.
- if you have long lasting episode pain than you can start to use antispasmodic drugs like sublingual hyoscyamine or topical nytoglicerine or short term benzodiazepine.

If you have other concerns I would be glad to assist you.
