Can One Sleep On The Stomach A Month After Umbilical Hernia Repair?
Question: I had surgery 3/30/15 to have an umbilical hernia repaired, gallbladder removed and tubal ligation. I have a 2 mo old that I have been gently lifting. I feel sometimes when i move the wrong way that i may have torn something between my belly button and surgical area directly to the right. Is this normal. Also is it ok to sleep on my stomach.

Noted your history of Surgery for Umbilical hernia repair, gallbladder removal and tubal ligation on 3/30/15, very recently.
It is normal to have some pain between belly button and surgical area directly to the right - looks to be the gall bladder area. If there are no other symptoms like nausea, vomiting, bloating, jaundice, pain in the right shoulder or severe local tenderness, this may then be surgical pain.
If you are not advised by your Surgeon to sleep on the stomach, better to avoid it as you have also undergone Umbilical hernia repair. You can sleep in supine or lateral position.
I would like to know a few more details:
- Was the surgery done by Laparoscopy method?
- Umbilical hernia repaired by open method or Laparoscopy?
- Was the mesh put is ?
If yes, is it under the skin or tucked underneath from within (peritoneal or Pre-peritoneal) ?
- Are there any other symptoms.
As I said above, if there are no other symptoms, there is less to worry about. The best policy is to consult the operating surgeon if you feel anything which is not natural, like excessive pain. Sometimes the small nerves get entrapped into the stitch causing the feeling of the tearing pain as you have explained.
