Can Non-alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease Cause Bad Body Odour?

default
Posted on Fri, 9 Oct 2015
Question: My husband has been having a foul smell coming from his backside and I'm not trying to be funny. It's not gas or sweat. It smells sour and I'm concerned it could be a symptom of something wrong with his liver. I've heard people can have a strange odor if they have liver disease. My husband is incredibly clean and never even gets body odor so it's very strange for him to be dealing with this. He has literally NEVER drank in his life time so I don't know who come liver disease is for someone that doesn't drink. The only medication he takes is Benadryl for his allergies. Any thoughts?

Brief Answer:
Unlikely to be related to liver

Detailed Answer:
Hello and Welcome

I appreciate your concern

Liver disease and to be more specific cirrhotic patients have a characteristic smell that comes from their mouth. Its known as fetor hepaticus. The smell you are referring to can be associated with a wound or simply sweat or contact with a foul smelling liquid or gaseous environment. If you are concerned about the liver being the cause, you can ask your husband to fix an appointment with his G.P. Liver function tests, hepatitis profile and an Ultrasound abdomen can be requested to be more sure and have peace of mind.

Wishing you best of health

Thanks
