Can Hyperthyroidism Cause Pounding Heart?
Question: hello. I seem to be having sort of "pounding" heart papitations that are more than just fluttering. They seem strong and when I lay down they continue to sort of pound I stopped drinking coffee and it helps a little but the problem seems to happen on and off all day. I am fine when I wake up in the morning until I get moving then they seem to start again. I take synthroid for hashimotos disease but that is the only RX. I am a 64 yo female
I feel anxious a little bit but not sure if this is anxiety related.
thank you

Detailed Answer:
Hello!
Thank you for the query.
If you have been drinking lots of coffee and are anxious, both this factors can impact to your heart rhythm. Hyperthyroidism can also cause such symptoms.
What you feel as a pounding is most likely heart extra beats. However it needs to be diagnosed, as some arrhythmias need stimulator insertion.
I suggest you to consult cardiologist and have 24 hours heart ECG (Holters ECG) and heart ultrasound. Please also have TSH checked to see if your thyroid is not too active.
In a meanwhile please avoid any coffee and caffeinated drinks. Start magnesium 400 mgs once a day.
Hope this will help. Feel free to ask further questions.
Regards.
