Can High Doses Of Vitamin D Cause Anxiety?

default
Posted on Mon, 16 Feb 2015
Question: Can 2,000 IUs of Vitamin D cause anxiety? I have been pre diagnosed with it and once I started taking the D my anxiety has worsened. I also recently started taking 1,200 mg of Calcium. My anxiety has gotten bad since I began to take them.
I forgot. I did see an endo who gave me a bone density scan and she said I was fine except that I had a slight thinning in my left hip. That's why she told me to take the vitamins. I've been on them for about a week, and just started noticing my increased anxiety a few days ago.

Brief Answer:
Calcium and Vitamin D are used in anxiety disorder

Detailed Answer:
Hello thanks for asking from HCM for your health related queries

You are taking Vitamin D 1200 IU and taken calcium 1200 mg. You are on these medicines since last seven days. When doses of Vitamin D are started, for first few days these may raise anxiety but you have been on these medicines for about a week. As per my opinion calcium or Vitamin D supplementation is not the reason of your anxiety. Over all calcium and Vitamin D are prescribed as supplements in anxiety disorders.

The doses you are taking are also not high so these drugs are probably not the cause of your symptoms. Take medicines with plenty of water or milk, this will reduce some epigastric side effects.

Thanks, please ask again if you have more doubts.

Take care

Hi again:

I first told you that I was told to take 2,000 IU of Vitamin D, not 1,200. Also, I have been tapering off a large dose of valium taken for an very extended period of time. I have now reached a goal level of 70% off the drug, and never had anxiety, only very bad insomnia. If only I knew at the time it was addictive.....

My psych has given me some meds to help with w/d symptoms. They include 500 mg of gabapentin, 300 mg of Trazodone (I don't have depression; it is being used for sleep) and 200 mg of Seroquel. Does the new fact that I am on 2,000 IU of D make a difference when compared to the 1,200 mg you thought I was on? Meaning more anxiety and bad sleep issues?
One more thing: My psych has been dropping my valium 5% every two weeks. I was crossed over to that from a high dose of klonopin, as Valium is much weaker and has a long half life. 1 mg of kpin = 20 mg of Valium.

Brief Answer:
Withdrawal from benzodiazepine is probably the reason of your anxiety

Detailed Answer:
Hello thanks for asking again

I am sorry it was just a typing mistake and instead 2000 I typed 1200 IU of Vitamin D. But this dose also cant result in precipitation of anxiety symptoms, the doses are absolutely normal.

Yes withdrawal from benzodiazepine is one of main reasons of your anxiety. Valium or Diazepam is long acting benzodiazepine and during reduction of its doses anxiety is seen commonly. Gabapentin will help to reduce anxiety and craving due to gradual reduction of doses and Trazodon and Quetiapine (Seroquel) will help to sleep and also anxiety. Your psychiatrist is right in shifting you from Clonazepam to Diazepam and this result relatively smoother withdrawal and de-addiction.

Thanks, hope this helps you.
