Brief Answer:
yes, hemorrhoids can cause significant bleeding depending upon its stage.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome to Ask A Doctor services.
I have read your query and here is my answer.

* As per my surgical experience, hemorrhoids consist of mass of anal tissue
sometimes protruding outside from pressure of defecation and bleed
through friction via hard stool.

* Depending upon the stage of development, hemorrhoids can be classified
as

@ 1st degree hemorrhoid - usually asymptomatic and you do not have any
discomfort
- incidental clinical finding

@ 2nd degree hemorrhoid - well formed tissue at 3,7,11 O`clock position
inside anus
- prolapse outside and goes inside on its own
- on & off discomfort while defecation, bleeding
of various intensity as mild, moderate to severe
- itching
- burning pain after defecation in case of hard
stool
- constipation, spicy food, prolong exposure to
heat exacerbate the condition

@ 3rd degree hemorrhoid - prolapsed second degree hemorrhoid, which
does not reduce and stay outside
- severe discomfort, pain, difficulty in sitting
- many bleed, until get thrombosed ( which do
not bleed )

In summary, I can conclude that hemorrhoids do present with varying degree of bleeding depending upon its intensity and it can cause lot of bleeding too.

Please let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards.
