Can Chronic Venous Disease Cause Skin Lesions?

Posted on Fri, 21 Apr 2017
Question: My Father had a skin ailment for past few years, it started has kind of rashes but now it has developed to kind of more aggressive in nature consulted many dermatologist initially came to a conclusion it's a eczema, since the diagnosis included steroidal treatment we therefore tried to reduce steroidal one and went on with trying towards homeopathy. The present treatment is with homeopathy for past three months, after 1 month pain in the leg has started to crop up from below knee to palm in an unbearable pain. The recent dermatologist consulted says it is not a case of eczema but it's s case of poor blood circulation, so now we are confused whether its a case of poor blood circulation or eczema or both..!! If u can suggest any way to know how to detect eczema or poor blood circulation it will be helpful

Brief Answer:
Vascular surgeon

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

This is a case of venous insufficiency with clear skin manifestations are there on the images attached. A clear line on the skin between the healthy skin and the darker skin is visible.
You should consult a Vascular surgeon first to check for patency of the vessels supplying both legs.
The surgeon would ask for Doppler scan and if it is good you may go in for simple but longer treatment for an year or two.
Compressive stocking, treatment of the cellulitis infection with antibiotic for two weeks, and moisturizing cream all these would help to retain the moisture over the skin.
But the treatment is practically simple and life long.
See a Vascular surgeon for patency of vessels and a Dermatologist for eczema lesion because of impaired blood supply to the area.

A deep respect and thanks for the reply. Dopler effect the result is positive. So is this a case of insufficiency of blood or eczema? The pain is unbearable particularly in night, stiffness in leg both released after few minutes. There is also issue of oozing out watery substance from the leg. There are many cracks too. There was also a period of continuous itching now it has come down but still itching occurs moderately in a day. Is there any dosage can be given to reduce the pain or sleep, until we see a vascular surgeon because it has been few days with no sleep at all

Brief Answer:
Insufficiency plus cellulitis plus stasis dermatitis

Detailed Answer:
hi

there is insufficiency, plus cellulitis of the skin plus stasis dermatitis in your father's case. all should be treated. the cracks lead to infection of dermis. as i said earlier the treatment is by vascular surgeon plus Dermatologist ( skin specialist).
