Can Antibiotic Be Taken For Pus Filled Bumps On Skin?

default
Posted on Mon, 10 Aug 2015
Question: I think I may have perioral dermatitis. I have had a red, bumpy (sometimes pustules), scaly rash since February. I have tried Retin A, Apple Cider Vinegar as well as Sophytopro Skin Purifying Cleanser, acne gel, and moisturizer. Will an antibiotic cure this?

Thank you!

Brief Answer:
Additional information required

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thanks for the query and photographs.
The bumps are appearing pus filled hence antibiotic is must.
I would like to know few additional details so I can give a closer diagnosis.
1. Do you have itch or pain in this rash ?
2. Did it start with itch ?
3. Similar rash anywhere else on the body like in groin armpits etc.
Please answer the above so I can guide you further.
Thank you.

1. My eyelid does itch, and around the sides of my upper lip/side of nose is a bit itchy at times, but nothing too bothersome. As far as pain goes, there is minor pain mostly when a new bump appears, or if the skin gets broken. The rash is also on the lower edge of my nostrils, which get extremely dry. That is the most painful area. I also have a deep groove on one side of my nose (from scabbing over and opening back up multiple times) which was very painful for a period of time.
2. It did not start with an itch that I can recall. I just thought I had a bout of acne.
3. I don't have any other parts of my body that have a similar rash, but I've noticed that when I shave, I get bumps more easily (mostly in the armpit.) Not sure that has anything to do with this, but thought I'd mention.

Brief Answer:
Aloevera and clindamycin

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thanks for the details.
I asked you those details to rule out fungal infection.
Please apply an antibacterial cream like mupirocine for 5 days.
This will take care of the infection.
After 5 days you can apply aloevera cream in night and clindamycin gel in day for 15 days.
These creams are usually available over the counter.
This combination should help you.
Let me know if you have any other doubts.
Thank you.

I've read to avoid the eyes, nose, and mouth with mupirocin. Those are precicely the areas I need to treat...is it ok for me to use the cream on my eyelid, around my mouth (not on my lips) and nose? What about the lower edges of my nostrils?
Also, I live in Minnesota, USA and both mupirocin and clindamycin gel require prescriptions. Can you give me a prescription? I am leaving town tomorrow so I would need it as soon as possible. Thank you!

Brief Answer:
Neosporin is a good substitute

Detailed Answer:

Yes you can use mupirocine (Bactroban) in these areas. Neosporin is another OTC antibacterial.
Unfortunately, its against the law in the US to provide online prescriptions. So I can't do that for you.

The OTC antibacterial creams should be more than enough though.
Thank you.
